To support the continuing preparation of an edition of the papers of Thomas Jefferson.
This project is preparing the authoritative book edition of the papers of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). No more than 20 percent of his documentary legacy had been published previous to the inception of the Princeton edition. Thirty-three volumes have appeared under the imprint of the Princeton University Press, 28 in the chronological series and 5 in the topical series. During the proposed grant period we will work on the four remaining pre-presidential volumes: final production work on Vol. 29 (1 March 1796-31 Dec. 1797); completion and submission of Vol. 30 (1 Jan. 1797-31 Jan 1799); completion and submission of Vol. 31 (1 Feb. 1799-31 May 1800); substantial editorial work on Vol. 32 (1 June 1800-3 March 1801); commencement of editing on Vol. 33 (the first presidential volume). The crucial groundwork for Jefferson's presidency will be laid during the proposed grant period.
