Mary Van Buren (Project Director: September 2001 to April 2005)

To support a multidisciplinary study of metallurgical techniques and economic aspects of both Inka and Spanish silver production in Porco (present-day Bolivia).

The research proposed here will integrate archaeological, historical, archaeometallurgical, and ethnographic data to gain insight into the organization of silver production at a historically important mining center in southern Bolivia and how it changed as a result of the Inka and Spanish conquests.
