Marzamemi Maritime Heritage (Web Resource)Title: Marzamemi Maritime Heritage
Author: Justin Leidwenger
Abstract: The Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project is a collaborative excavation, survey, and heritage management initiative focusing on the maritime landscape and seaborne communication off the southeast coast of Sicily, Italy. The concentration of accessible sites and their location at the intersection of the eastern and western Mediterranean facilitates inquiry into long-term structures of regional and interregional maritime exchange from the early Roman era (3rd/2nd c. BC) through Late Antiquity (6th/7th c. AD). The first field seasons undertake the excavation of the so-called Marzamemi “church wreck”, which sank while carrying prefabricated architectural elements for the construction of an early Byzantine church alongside other cargo from the northern Aegean during the 6th c. AD. This ship’s cargo, personal items, and hull remains may offer unique insights into the relationship between state-driven and independent commerce as well as the ambitious reconstruction program integral to the Byzantine Emperor Justinian’s projection of imperial ideology across his realm. Equally important to this research, the project situates fieldwork within a broader dialog on responsible collaborative natural and cultural heritage practices. We aim to utilize community archaeology and public outreach to implement site management alongside local initiatives for environmentally sustainable tourism and economic development.

The Marzamemi ‘Church Wreck’: A Multi-Scalar Approach to Economic Loss in Late Antiquity (Conference Paper/Presentation)Title: The Marzamemi ‘Church Wreck’: A Multi-Scalar Approach to Economic Loss in Late Antiquity
Author: A.J. Donnelly
Author: J. Leidwanger
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first is to release the shipwreck’s narrative from its dependence on Justinian; recent finds raise doubts regarding this connection and its required chronology, freeing the vessel to serve as a broader marker of routine Late Antique connectivity. The second is to examine how this assemblage can inform our understanding of the shape and resilience of the maritime economy in the decades preceding Justinian’s reign. By evaluating the potential scale and radiating effects of this ship’s loss, we argue for a much broader impact on connectivity that went beyond simply one expensive architectural project. Framing the shipwreck as an economic disaster opens an alternative window into the individuals, communities, and institutions whose investments—at least on more fortuitous occasions—sustained connections across the early sixth-century Mediterranean.

Abstract: Ongoing underwater survey off southeast Sicily aims to explore more than two millennia of maritime activity at the fishing and commercial port of Vendicari. Undertaken as part of the Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project, investigations here have recently focused on the rich late antique material record, which offers a window into this strategic crossroads of Mediterranean connectivity during a transformative period. This paper introduces the maritime cultural landscape of Vendicari and discusses the first results, with particularly emphasis on the utility of systematic transect survey for revealing seabed site formation processes and broad patterns of seaborne interaction.

Contextualizing the Late Antique Stone Trade: The Marzamemi ‘Church Wreck’ Reconsidered (Conference Paper/Presentation)Title: Contextualizing the Late Antique Stone Trade: The Marzamemi ‘Church Wreck’ Reconsidered
Author: J. Leidwanger
Abstract: Since 2013, investigations of the famous Marzamemi “church wreck” have aimed to shed new light on this monumental 6th-century CE assemblage off the Sicilian coast. With a load of more than one hundred tons of prefabricated religious and decorative architectural elements, the site has long been associated with the massive building program that followed Justinian’s brief re-conquest of the late Roman west. Five fieldwork campaigns to date, however, have raised critical questions about the longstanding narrative of an imperially sponsored “flat-pack” structure designed for rote assembly at a single destination. Alongside re-evaluation of the major architectural elements, analysis of the shipboard assemblage, secondary cargo, and broader historical context provides new clues about private commercial and directed exchange, local and imperial patronage and propaganda, and maritime connectivity more generally. From cooking pots, iron fasteners and tools, to transport amphora lids, mineral pigments, and stone and glass “samples,” recent finds offer a window into the logistics and mechanisms of stone transport that were fundamental to massive late antique elite urban building programs. At the same time, a more holistic view of the shipwreck assemblage demonstrates the complexity of interrelated processes that fostered and sustained socioeconomic connectivity more generally through these final years of large-scale trans-Mediterranean exchange.

Marzamemi II ‘Church Wreck’ Excavation: 2017 Field Season (Article)Title: Marzamemi II ‘Church Wreck’ Excavation: 2017 Field Season

Abstract: New investigations of the famous Marzamemi II ‘church wreck’—originally brought to scholarly and public attention in the 1960s—began in 2013 as part of an overall collaborative initiative combining survey and excavation with heritage management and museum development off the southeast coast of Sicily. Dating around the early 6th century AD and carrying a monumental primary cargo of partially prefabricated religious and decorative architectural elements, the ship was almost certainly lost while en route for a building program somewhere in the late antique west. Annual fieldwork campaigns over the past five years have shed new light on the major architectural assemblage, while revealing additional cargo, shipboard items, and traces of the hull itself. The following presents results of the 2017 field season and synthesizes new finds with those of earlier reports in this journal (see Leidwanger, Bruno 2014; Leidwanger, Tusa 2015, 2016, 2017).

Abstract: Initially explored by pioneering underwater archaeologist Gerhard Kapitän in the 1960s, the famous 6th-c. AD ‘church wreck’ at Marzamemi (Sicily)—with its cargo of prefabricated religious architectural elements—holds a special place in discussions of the ancient stone transport and late antique exchange. Renewed investigations aim to shed light on the broader socioeconomic and historical circumstances surrounding the shipment, including patterns of maritime connectivity between the divergent east and west and the possible roles of imperial agency and local patronage in ambitious architectural programs. Critical to these questions are the origin and destination for the cargo. Stable isotope analysis offers a window into the geographic range of resources available for this architectural program and, by extension, possible clues to the organization of materials, labor, and sponsorship. Analysis of the historical and architectural context allows evaluation of plausible destinations. This study opens new possibilities for interpreting the social and political world of 6th-century exchange and a re-evaluation of the multifaceted relationship between Justinian and the recently acquired imperial lands.
