New Netherland Project: Translating and Editing of New Netherland Archives

FAIN: RZ-50151-04

University of the State of New York (Albany, NY 12203-5156)
Charles T. Gehring (Project Director: November 2003 to September 2008)

The translation of two volumes of Dutch colonial documents (consisting of the council minutes, 1656-1658, and correspondence, 1659-1660), and the transcription of two additional volumes (consisting of the council minutes, 1660-1661, and correspondence, 1661-1662).

The New Netherland Project will translate 17th century Dutch records of the colonial government of New Netherland. Written in an archaic form of Dutch, these historically significant documents are effectually unavailable to researchers because of the language barrier. This project will provide access to original colonial archives of continuing legal and historical importance relating to all the New England and Middle Atlantic States. During this 3-year grant period about 800 pages of archives from the period 1654-1680 will be translated and annotated for eventual publication by Syracuse University Press.
