Preparation of the first volume of a nearly complete five-part series on the history of the symphony. An audio CD of recordings of less familiar but important works will accompany the volume. (24 months)

My project will be the first volume of a 5-part series (The Symphonic Repertoire) being published by Indiana University Press. In addition to analytical studies of 23 composers and essays on symphonic composition in Europe, it will present a reconsideration of the standard symphonic narrative. I am the main editor and will also be responsible for writing 30% of a 500 page book. In my sections I will consider a number of issues, including national identity and musical style, definitions of convention, reception history, and patronage.
