The translation of 4,716 pages of Warsaw Pact documents from Polish, German, Russian, Hungarian, Czech, Bulgarian, and Romanian into English. (34 months)

The Parallel History Project (PHP) on NATO and the Warsaw Pact has published online around 10,000 pages of documents in Polish, German, Russian, Hungarian, Czech, Bulgarian, and Romanian relating to the history of the Warsaw Pact. An international group of well-known scholars will translate or oversee the translation of 4,716 pages of key documents from these seven languages into English. The documents, which come from the highest-level decision-making bodies of the Warsaw Pact, will provide new insights into the history of the Cold War: Why did it last so long? Why did it end when it did? Why did it not end in a nuclear conflagration? The new documents will also help historians trace the origins and development of "human security" as a novel theme in the theory and practice of international relations. The edited and annotated translations will be published online and made available to the public free of charge.
