Preparation of one Russian-language volume and two English-language volumes examining the impact of Stalinism on the Soviet countryside. (24 months)

We will complete the work of an international project to study Stalinism in the Soviet countryside, where over 2/3 of the population lived before World War II. We have published six volumes of documents largely from the inaccessible KGB Archive, along with the first volume of an English edition published under contract with Yale University Press. A second English volume will go to press in April 2007. We would like support for the last Russian volume (a statistical appendix on collective farm income in the 1930s) and the last two English volumes - a monograph on the Great Purges in the Soviet Countryside and an overview volume that sums up the findings of our project as a whole.
