A conference with international participants in preparation of a book on the history of countries and cultures connected by the Atlantic Ocean. (12 months)

The aim is to hold a conference on November 13-16, 2008 at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, at which 38 draft essays will be discussed. An international team of highly distinguished scholars has been enlisted, because it is vital to draw on as many perspectives as possible. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the Atlantic World over the course of its first, formative three and a half centuries. The task is to demonstrate connections, explore contrasts, and probe themes. These essays, suitably revised, will then appear in a volume to be published by Oxford University Press in their new Handbook Series, entitled The Atlantic World, c. 1450 to c. 1840. The submission date is expected to be May 1, 2009. This volume should become a road map for future research, no less than a summation of the existing state of knowledge on a rapidly evolving subject.
