Abstract: Pacific Historic Parks hosted a virtual Mes CHamoru (Chamorro Month) story time program in March of 2021 for Guam Department of Education 4th grade students and teachers. The program features two guest speakers: Guam World War II Survivor Mrs. Natividad Calvo and Guam History Consultant Ms. Dominica Tolentino. This 45-minute story hour offers a glimpse of the experiences of the CHamoru people and serves as an invitation for kids to learn more about and understand the sacrifices and strength of those who lived through the war.

Abstract: With CARES Act funding, Inetnon Gef Pago Cultural Arts Program will continue to produce opportunities to engage our youth and community to think critically about their personal identity and how history and environment as told through performance arts can inform current cultural issues in order to provide positive opportunities directly advancing its mission to promote an awareness of, and cultural pride in Chamorro heritage through performance arts with the ultimate goal of creating cultural practitioners who develop a passion for our culture and are able to communicate it through music, dance, chant, and other forms of performance. Specifically, this grant will fund salaries and wages, costumes and supplies, audio-visual, advertisement and promotional needs which will ultimately expand our outreach and produce platforms and programming for those wanting to contribute to the perpetuation, education, and promotion of our islands culture and identity.

The series featured presentations led by CHamoru women scholars, activists, experts and cultural practitioners and included facilitated discussion and other interactive components. Programs funded by this grant included 9 webinar events that were produced and presented on the IHFG Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/haganguahan/ and one in-person event was produced and presented at the Agat Community Center. All events included facilitated discussion.
In addition to presenting the events in the webinar series, IHFG dedicated a portion of grant funds to offer a laptop and MiFi lending service. Five laptops and six MiFi devices were made available to women to support their participation in the webinar series. Additionally, traditional medicine kits or åmot CHamoru kits and åmot famalåo’an kits for the two workshops were assembled and distributed to project participants.

Abstract: With HG CARES Act funding, Inadahen i Lina'la Kotturan CHamoru was able to reopen Sagan Kotturan CHamoru (SKC) for our community to have access to our traditional healers, fresh produce distribution, and the arts, which in many ways provided a healing space in the midst of a global pandemic. Our mission at SKC is to perpetuate the values and practices of the Chamoru culture by providing space for artisans and cultural practitioners to develop and exhibit their art form, sharpen their skills, and share and pass down knowledge of these practices. The CARES Act funded the reopening of SKC and provided an alternative to our Saturday weaving workshop through an online weaving segment.

Abstract: A continuous training in seafaring for a duration of eight weeks and harvesting of local materials needed to maintain, repair, and eventual construction of a hut was a parallel activity of the program. These programs have ran throughout the year but the last eight weeks training cycle was carried out from mid July to early September 2021. For the seafaring component, participants were given basic introduction to the various sets and skills of knowledge that are essential to seafaring. These include basic understanding of land, ocean, and stars that are used on traditional navigation.
Seafaring training in celestial navigation and canoe application workshops and lectures as well as actual hands on training took place. Canoe house structure- harvesting local materials and minor repair and maintenance took place during the reporting period.

Abstract: With CARES Act Funding, the Guam Preservation Trust produced 10 instructional stories of 10 of Guam's historic sites delivered in the CHamoru language. A virtual fieldtrip was produced for each site including a song and melody in order to increase the effectiveness of the instruction and delivery directly advancing the mission of Guam Preservation Trust. Specifically, the program supported the goal of increasing appreciation of historic sites, learning and hearing of new stories of the site in the CHamoru langauge, and increasing knowledge and rethinking of how historic sites and songs associated with them can help preserve an indigenous language.

Abstract: The HG CARES grant funded the I Hinanao-Ta Exhibit portion of the overall grander project to commemorate Guam's contact with Magellan which was commemorated by the Government of Spain's Navy who arrived in Guam in February/March 2021. This exhibit was to be displayed at the Guam Museum as part of that overall celebration and commemoration, however the Guam Museum was not open due to COVID public health restrictions and the island in PCOR2. The research though was presented to the community in the Pacific Daily News in print and online forms. A visual display was provided to the public on July 30, 2021 at the Guam Preservation Trust office.

Abstract: With CARES Act funding, Micronesia Climate Change Alliance delivered a web series that explores waste generation through a sociological approach. In order to curb the plastic waste crisis in our region, Micronesia Climate Change Alliance is directly advancing its mission to raise consciousness about waste consumption through digital media. Specifically this grant will fund a web series entitled "From Our Nånas, For Our Nenis" which investigates the history of how plastics were introduced to Micronesia followed by the current waste streams in existence today and local people working towards solutions. The primary audience benefitting from this funding is teachers, students, scholars and community members alike.
