Development of a feature-length documentary about Susan Sontag's life and work.

Regarding Susan Sontag is a feature-length documentary film in development on the late critic, writer, and director. The proposed film is a 90-minute biography intended for public television, broadcast, and educational distribution, with a proposed production budget of approximately $850,000. If an NEH development grant is awarded, the primary deliverables for the grant period will include creation of a detailed film script, conducting and transcribing pre-interviews, further archival footage research, one research trip and reports on this work, and further development of the project's interactive elements and ancillary materials. The project website is a vehicle for sharing Susan Sontag's ideas with a growing audience for the film. The Sontag site, along with its links to other social networking media such as Facebook, will also provide an essential mechanism for outreach and distribution when the film is completed. We will also plan and conduct several academic colloquia.
