Development of a two-hour documentary on the emergence and rise of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States.

Firelight Media and Firelight Films are requesting a development (planning) grant of $40,000 for the continued research and development of Faith in Education [working title], a two-hour documentary on the emergence and rise of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Funds will support further meetings with project advisors, additional library and archival research, the conducting of preliminary interviews, and preparation of materials to be used to seek scripting and production funds. As Firelight did on its award-winning documentary The Black Press: Soldiers without Swords (created with NEH support), we will explore the complex history of HBCUs through the careful selection of characters and stories, explored in the social, racial, economic, and religious context from which they emerge. The humanities disciplines informing this work include American history, African-American studies, religious studies and education studies.
