Scripting and development of a 90-minute documentary film exploring the life and ideas of the science fiction and fantasy writer Ursula K. Le Guin.

This application is a request to the National Endowment for the Humanities for $75,000 to support Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin, a feature documentary film exploring the life, roots, and ideas of the celebrated science fiction and fantasy writer. Through the lens of Le Guin's career, the film reflects on science fiction and fantasy as significant genres of American literature. Ms. Le Guin (b. 1929) will appear extensively in the film, a 90-minute biography to be shot in various locations throughout the U.S. Shot in high-definition video and using an array of archival materials, Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin is intended for online and educational distribution as well as major public television broadcast to the widest possible audience. The production team requests funding to develop the program script, to develop and refine the film?s structure and content by consulting with humanities advisors, to consult with animators, and to conduct pre-interviews and initial archival research.
