Sean Barlow (Project Director: January 2010 to present)

Production of 18 one-hour radio episodes, re-editing of 12 encore episodes, and development of new website components about African music and culture.

Since 1988, the public radio program Afropop Worldwide has introduced listeners to the contemporary music cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora. Distributed by PRI to 103 U.S. stations, it is also available via on-demand streaming from our website, www.afropop.org. Over the past six years, Afropop has collaborated with leading scholars to produce our acclaimed, NEH-funded Hip Deep series, which introduces humanities themes to general audiences. Our 2009-2010 NEH grant also funded the re-development of www.afropop.org and the addition of a Hip Deep-specific site section which organized Hip Deep's multi-media content for easier access. World Music Productions now requests a 2-year grant of $350,000 (1/3 share of total cost)from the NEH to continue this work by 1) producing 18 new and 12 encore programs 2) creating video, blogging and new audio player components into the new Hip Deep site and 3) initiating a comprehensive, ongoing interactive media outreach campaign.
