Production of a two-hour documentary film and website on the history of Zionism.

The Zionist Idea will be a two-hour documentary film exploring one of the most influential political ideologies of the modern era. Originating in Europe in the late 19th century, Zionism was born out of the Jewish confrontation with modernity and the renewed persecution of Jews throughout Europe. Seeking national self-expression and an end to anti-Semitism, Zionist pioneers sought to create a Jewish state on land to which they had ancient biblical ties, but which was then home to an Arab population that had lived there for centuries. The result has been more than a century of conflict and bloodshed. Today Zionism -- subject to fierce argument and often lethal controversy -- is little understood. As the Middle East retains its central role in world politics and conflicts between Arabs and Jews threaten the entire region, this project seeks to provide Americans with a better understanding of Zionism. The project includes a companion website, accompanying book and traveling exhibition.
