Afropop Worldwide's Hip Deep

FAIN: TR-50369-12

Afropop World Wide (Brooklyn, NY 11232-2408)
Sean Barlow (Project Director: January 2012 to present)

Production of nine new radio and web episodes, re-editing and rebroadcasting six previously produced programs, migration of current website to new more accessible website, and the implementation of a new dissemination and syndication strategy for the "Hip Deep" series.

Since 1988, the public radio program Afropop Worldwide has introduced listeners to the contemporary music cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora. Distributed by PRI to 107 U.S. stations, it is also available via on-demand streaming from our website, www.afropop.org. Over the past eight years, Afropop has collaborated with leading scholars to produce our acclaimed, NEH-funded "Hip Deep" series, which introduces humanities themes to general audiences. Our 2009-2010 NEH grant also funded the re-development of www.afropop.org and the addition of a "Hip Deep"-specific site section which organized "Hip Deep's" multi-media content for easier access. World Music Productions now requests a 1-year grant of $175,000 (40% of total cost) from the NEH to continue this work by 1) producing 9 new and 6 encore programs 2) migrate "Hip Deep" section to new website, create video, audio and text supplements to new shows, and 3) execute a comprehensive, ongoing interactive media outreach campaign.
