Production of ten new radio episodes, substantive updates of five existing Afropop Worldwide "Hip Deep" programs exploring contemporary African music, education materials, and an outreach and evaluation campaign.
Since 1988, our award-winning public radio program "Afropop Worldwide" has introduced listeners to contemporary music cultures of Africa and the African diaspora. Hosted by broadcast personality Georges Collinet and distributed by PRI to 104 U.S. stations, it is also available streaming from our website, afropop.org. Over 9 years, Afropop has collaborated with leading scholars to produce our acclaimed, NEH-funded "Hip Deep" series introducing humanities themes to general audiences. Our 2009-2012 grants funded re-development of afropop.org and the creation of a Hip Deep-specific section organizing all Hip Deep content for easy access. World Music Productions requests a 1-year grant of $200,000 to 1) produce 10 new and encore 5 programs, 2) begin to develop Hip Deep education materials targeting informal education settings, 3) launch a 2-part evaluation strategy, optimizing user experience of Hip Deep content online and improving brand syndication/outreach techniques to expand audiences.
