Women, War & Peace: The Balkans

FAIN: TW-50049-11

WNET (New York, NY 10019-7416)
Pamela Hogan (Project Director: July 2010 to present)

Production of a one-hour documentary examining the impact of civil war in the Balkans on women and the first international trial for crimes of sexual violence in wartime.

Women, War & Peace: The Balkans is a one-hour documentary about the Balkans' explosion into civil war in the 1990s, the reports of mass rapes used as a tactic of war, and the international court established to end the impunity. The film explores the jurisprudential precedents regarding war crimes against women set by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In particular, it focuses on the story of the municipality of Foca in eastern Bosnia. The film presents the women who bravely sought justice at the Foca trial, which became the first trial in history focused on wartime crimes of sexual violence. The Balkans is part of a five-part documentary series, Women, War & Peace, which will air on public television in 2011 as a special presentation of WIDE ANGLE.

Abstract: When the Balkans exploded into war in the 1990s, reports that tens of thousands of women were being systematically raped as a tactic of ethnic cleansing captured the international spotlight. I Came to Testify tells how sixteen women who had been imprisoned by Serb-led forces in the Bosnian town of Foca broke history’s great silence and took the witness stand in an international court of law. Their courage resulted in a triumphant verdict that led to new international laws about sexual violence in war. Narrated by Matt Damon, the film is the first hour in the five-part documentary series Women, War & Peace that aired on PBS in 2011.
