Development of a two-hour documentary film analyzing how nations (Germany, Peru, and Spain) attempt to resolve their collective memory of political atrocities

"Memoryscape" will be a two-hour documentary film composed of stories set in Germany, Peru, and Spain, nations grappling with how to define and memorialize a painful past. At the core of our film is the concept of “memoryscape” – the physical, narrative, and emotional landscape of shared memory that societies construct in the wake of a major conflict or other societal upheaval – in part to build more open and peaceful societies now and in the future. The film will draw lessons about this very difficult but essential process from memory initiatives and debates ongoing in the three countries. We will apply a humanities lens, focusing in particular on the use of art and architecture in memorialization and exploring the will to remember as a desire common among all people, visually expressed in the rich textures of HD cinematography, guaranteeing our film will have a spectacular presence both in national/international HD television broadcasts and on theatrical screens.
