Production of a 90-minute documentary film examining the life and career of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), the iconic Egyptian figure who led Egypt from 1952 until his death.
This is a production proposal for "Nasser, An Egyptian Story", a 90-minute documentary about Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian who led a coup against his king, liberated his country from British domination, and ruled from 1952 until his death in 1970. Nasser was a charismatic and controversial figure. Americans saw him as a strongman who brought the world to the brink of world war, but for the Arabs he stood for a new personal dignity and national sovereignty. Today America is deeply and painfully entangled in the Middle East, which is itself struggling with Nasser's legacy. All this makes the need for public understanding of the region greater than ever. Nasser's story illuminates all the major cross-currents of modern Middle Eastern history, including anti-colonialism, the rise of authoritarianism, the repression of Islamism, and the dream of a united Arab polity.
