Making Connections: Bringing the 2 Mississippi Museums to Mississippi Classrooms

Acquisition of multimedia technology to connect the museums to Mississippi schools, providing students with access to both museum materials and persons of interest (such as academic experts and those with first-hand experience). Funds will also cover technical and curricular training for the schools based on the needs of the schools

We request $100,000 for a multimedia classroom learning initiative to extend the resources of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum directly into classrooms across Mississippi after they open in 2017. Using state-of-the-art equipment and multimedia programs, we will provide recently trained teachers with materials never before available. Students will interact with artifacts, stories, voices, music, and art and have two-way communication with curators, historians, civil rights leaders, and storytellers. They will be engaged in Mississippi’s rich but difficult history. The initiative will provide intensive technological and academic support for 30 schools and academic support for another 30 schools that already have laptops and high-speed internet. Thousands more students will be reached in classrooms and other community sites that host youth programs and already have this technological capacity.

Scenes from Mississippi History: The Tougaloo Nine (Film/TV/Video Broadcast or Recording)
Title: Scenes from Mississippi History: The Tougaloo Nine

Abstract: On March 27, 1961, nine Tougaloo College students—Meredith Anding Jr., James Bradford, Alfred Cook, Geraldine Edwards, Janice Jackson, Joseph Jackson Jr., Albert Lassiter, Gloria Pierce, and Ethel Sawyer—held a sit-in at the Jackson Municipal Library. The Tougaloo Nine were members of the Tougaloo College NAACP Youth Council. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, which opened alongside the Museum of Mississippi History in 2017, explores the period from 1945 to 1976, when Mississippi was ground zero for the Civil Rights Movement nationally. The museum features an exhibit about the Tougaloo Nine in “A Tremor in the Iceberg” gallery. This video was developed by the MDAH and Two Mississippi Museums education teams. Abstract: The Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum are now offering a unique and dynamic virtual field trip experience! Teachers and students are invited to connect with the Two Mississippi Museums through live, interactive video conference programs. Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, MDAH has developed the video series Scenes from Mississippi History that covers specific topics found in our museums for teachers and students. There are also videos featuring our temporary exhibit, Mississippi Distilled, that cover Temperance and Prohibition. Use them as bellringers or part of a larger lesson.
