Paid museum internships for ten Spelman students
annually. These internships will be eight to ten weeks long during the summer
to complement course offerings in curatorial studies.
Spelman College requests an NEH Access Challenge Grant to support,
expand, formalize, and sustain the Spelman College Museum Internship Program. Spelman College students have a
strong track record of securing paid summer internships in major museums. While museums commonly offer unpaid
internships, they are serious barriers for many Spelman students who require paid opportunities during the summer. This
program allows students to build upon the experiences that they have had at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art
during the academic year, bringing art historical knowledge to bear beyond the classroom, and gaining practical
proficiencies that inform career decisions. Now, with its recent launch of the Curatorial Studies Program, Spelman
College is more committed than ever to helping to create a pipeline of future museum leaders and, over time, increasing
the diversity of the field. The Museum Internship Program is a significant component of this effort.
