Programs for a total of 30 public school students in Chattanooga, Tennessee, focused on aspects of the city’s African American experience. Activities include collecting oral histories; serving as guides on public walking tours; and presenting the results of their research through multimedia projects.

To support the need for historical and cultural preservation of the African-American heritage of Chattanooga, TN, The Intersection provides the opportunity to tell, re-tell, and learn from storied based on lived experiences through an expansion of an ongoing preservation effort within the city’s urban core. The Intersection will serve an intergenerational cohort including children, young adults, and seniors. It will allow children to learn from their elders by participating in the re-telling of culturally significant stories and leading public historical walking tours with the help of local university student mentors. The seniors will have their histories captured and appreciated by the future generation using technology they would not normally have access to. To ensure a public impact beyond the tours, the youth will produce radio stories and mini-documentaries for distribution to the greater region and beyond.
