Her assessment of the current storage conditions will guide us in setting short-, mid-, and long-term goals for such items as staffing, collection policies, storage, exhibits, and facilities. Facility recommendations will include environmental controls, emergency preparedness and security. Area museums will be invited to send representatives to the training to enhance the training opportunity and begin dialog among museums. |

This application is part of Phase II of a four-phase project to upgrade storage of organic artifacts held by the Laramie Plains Museum. Phase I, which is complete, was for training and inventory of textiles. Phase II is to purchase environmental monitoring equipment and materials to rehouse 3,500 textile artifacts. With this grant, environmental monitoring equipment will be purchased and 2,000 textiles will be rehoused, including men's and children's wear, dolls, Native American collections, rugs, and clothing accessories. Phase II is designed to provide the data needed to design a new HVAC system for the organic artifact storage areas and to rehouse artifacts in preparation for the move. |

This project will be used to conduct on-site training, implement the next step of a three-year move plan to upgrade environment, storage, and improve accessibility for 900 art/archival items (and 1,500 photos contained within 23 photo albums). We will hire two consultants: a conservation consultant to conduct on-site training emphasizing collections care, rehousing, storage, and preparation for scanning art/archival holdings; and an art curator consultant to help develop plans for arranging, describing and addressing the preservation needs for LPM art holdings. The LPM curator will direct volunteers and staff who will spend ten months (with assistance from the consultants) to implement the goals and objectives of this project. At its completion, LPM's art/archives collection will be accessible, rehoused, prioritized for scanning, and a large portion (80%) will be moved from attic or basement storage to improved storage in an area that will eventually be climate controlled. |

The consultations are based upon recommendations from Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) and IMLS ReCAP assessments in 1997 and 2006 and a 2008 NEH Preservation Assistance Grant.
This project is to preserve 175 Native American and ethnographic artifacts at the Laramie Plains Museum. We will utilize two consultants, Ms Terri Schindel, Conservator, and Ms Lynn Brittner, Native American and ethnographic museum expert. The Museum Training Network's Mobile Lab will be rented for a 2-day onsite visit, one day for the consultants to advise preservation of beadwork, basketry, pottery, textile and other artifacts, and to make recommendations for improving the environment for storage of these artifacts. The second day will be a training to which 15 other area museum staff and volunteers will be invited, as well as our own. We will utilize a multi-purpose building on our city-block "campus" for this training. We will upgrade the storage closet in the 3rd floor Southwest "Tower Room" of the 1892 Ivinson Mansion, which is a historic house musuem as well as a local history museum collection. |
