"La Chronique Universelle," an anonymous and unpublished French world chronicle usually preserved in scroll format, epitomizes 15th-century French worldview and self-image by presenting the history of the Western world from a French perspective. The "Chronique" includes illustrations and genealogical diagrams that trace the lineage of Jesus and Aeneas in the ancient world and the kings of France and England in medieval Europe. During the Fellowship tenure, I will: examine all known copies of the scroll to determine how the manuscripts are related to one another; study the text and illuminations in great detail to determine their sources; and edit and translate the text for the first time. This work will culminate in a published monograph.
