Establishment and support for the Center for Textual and Editorial Studies in Humanistic Sources, a program for instruction of graduate students in the handling and editing of manuscript sources and printed text. Establishment and support for the Center for Textual and Editorial Studies in Humanistic Sources, a program for instruction of graduate students in the handling and editing of manuscript sources and printed texts. Consideration will be given to the transmission of literary and historical texts and to the principles of textual criticism and literary and historical editing. Primary purpose of center is to reintroduce American students of history and literature to concern for the integrity of the text upon which conclusions in the fields is based. Will prepare some of these students for careers as scholarly editors. Arrangements have been made with the University of Virginia Library, the Virginia Historical Society, the Library of the College of William and Mary, and the Research Department of colonial Williamsburg, Inc., to provide photographic copies of unedited manuscripts and printed materials to serve as texts for instruction in editorial procedures, which will result in a body of edited texts which have contributed to the training of the student editors which can then be published without further editing. Plans have been made for apprentice programs and/or lectures by the editorial staffs of the paper of George Washington, the John Marshall papers, the James Madison Papers and Stephen Crane's literary texts. Cooperation also planned with the Modern Language Association's Center for Editions of American Authors. Fund for first 2 years of projected 5 year project. Covers salaries, graduate fellowships, honoraria, travel, supplies, indirect costs.

A book-length study of Constitutional debates during the period 1815 to 1861.

“The Interbellum Constitution” argues that the decades between the War of 1812 and the Civil War were a dynamic era characterized by both constitutional crisis and conviction. My project shows that the struggle over the interbellum Constitution was the source of some of the most fundamental values, and the most troubling problems, of U.S. law and politics. Public debate in the period was dominated by the issues of commerce and concurrent power, both of which were framed but left unresolved by the Constitution. Commerce became a source of national identity, a zone of regional conflict, and a touchstone of legal and political debate. Contemporaries were also consumed by fights over concurrent power – areas in which federal and state authority overlapped, including slavery, taxation, and public works projects. Drawing on popular and legal sources, my account demonstrates that the period generated a new set of constitutional ideas that bridged the founding and Reconstruction periods.

Cataloging and digitization of 1,200 original, non-fiction essays written by prisoners in the American criminal justice system.

We seek funding to support The American Prison Writing Archive (APWA), the largest and first fully searchable digital archive of first-person, non-fiction essays by incarcerated people and prison workers writing about their experience inside. Currently holding over 1,100 essays in its paper files, and gathering 1,200 more before and during the grant period, the APWA fills a yawning gap in the literature on a prison-jail system that holds 2.26 million Americans and affects millions of others. Based in first-person narratives, the APWA will re-open the prison to humanities scholars sidelined from prison studies in face of the sheer size of the U.S. prison system. It will build and maintain a national, collaborative archive serving scholarly and general audiences, and it will bring together faculty and students, library and technology specialists, and members of the larger community to develop the most innovative and sustainable digital features to serve all interested parties.

The transcription and annotation of the papers of Mississippi state governors from 1859 to 1882, including official correspondence, military telegrams, and letters and petitions from the public.

The Civil War and Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi Project (CWRGM) is an open-access digital documentary edition of over 20,000 documents from the state's governors'' papers spanning nine administrations from 1859 through John Marshall Stone's first term (1876-1882). As of July 2022, our Omeka-S-based website provides free access to nearly 7,000 documents that include digital document files, metadata, transcriptions, enhanced subject tagging, a full index, and additional annotations. We are committed to completing this project over a ten-year period that began in 2020. With this in mind, CWRGM is seeking a three-year NEH Humanities Collections and Reference Resources (HCRR) grant of $349,862 to provide critical funding for the next three years of this project. We are a past recipient of NEH HCRR support (2020-2023) and we are proud to report that we are meeting our objectives despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Preparation for publication of volumes 22 and 23 of the papers of John Adams (1735-1826) and volumes 16, 17, 18 of the Adams Family’s correspondence. (36 months)

The Adams Papers Editorial Project at the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) is the authoritative scholarly edition of the diaries, letters, official records, public writings, and literary miscellanies written by three generations of the Adams Family of Massachusetts, including Abigail Adams, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Louisa Catherine Adams, Charles Francis Adams, and their families. Since 1956, the project has published 56 volumes, with 49 freely available online (https://www.masshist.org/publications/adams-papers/). This family record charts the generational shifts in American life from the Revolution through the Civil War. As the nation’s 250th anniversary approaches, editors are focused on the founding generation’s efforts to establish “A More Perfect Union,” a complex saga that will unfold in 17 more volumes by 2039. The Adams Papers has received continuous aid from the NEH since 2003; we seek further support to make this unparalleled resource accessible to all.

Completion of volume 6 and preliminary work on volume 7 of The Papers of George Catlett Marshall.

Edit the sixth of seven volumes of George C. Marshall's papers. The sixth volume includes documents (telegrams, letters, memorandums, speeches, etc.) written during his tenure as U.S. Secretary of State (January 1947-January 1949) and as head of the American Battle Monuments Commission and the American Red Cross (January 1949-September 1950). Nearly all documents published will be by Marshall, as opposed to staff-drafted for Marshall's signature. The decisions taken and activities undertaken in international relations by the United States during the early Cold War period (1945-50) continue to be controversial, much studied by students and professionals in many disciplines, and of influence in recent events.
