Project to compile complete dictionary of the Yiddish language, from earliest extant records to the present world-wide dispersion of the language. ABSTRACT: Project to compile complete dictionary of the Yiddish language, from earliest extant records to the present world-wide dispersion of the language. Entries to include not only definitions and roots, but usages, social patterns and beliefs. Attempts to research entire field of Yiddish and complete comprehensive dictionary started prior to World War II in Europe and US. Most collections and compliled materials lost in war and most researchers and compilers eliminated under Nazis. Crucial that work be completed as soon as possible since number of scholars who have dealt with Yiddish as a "living" language rapridly diminishing. Qualified personnel being trained by grantee but no younger scholars have been raised with Yiddish as second language. Yiddish has played crucial role in Jewish history, linking Jews around the world in the last centuries. Key to Jewish culture and to the extent that this culture has influenced American culture, relevant also for America. Important nuances and meaning will be lost forever if project not completed during lifetime of aging Jewish scholars; insights into American and Jewish cultures will at same time disappear.
