A teacher institute on the new worlds of Lewis and Clark, and a series of short radio spots, "On Principle," to illuminate what Oregonians think about defining American principles.

$22,920 of our We the People Funds will be used to host a Teacher Institute examining Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery expedition; a seminal event in the history and culture of America and particularly of the Pacific Northwest.Thirty teachers will attend the institute, and take new knowledge and resources back to their classrooms, improving education for more than 3,000 students. The remaining $34,900 will be used to launch a radio program that will help Oregonians talk about principles of democracy and examine the diversity of views and beliefs that we hold within those principles.

"On Principle: A Statewide Conversation," regional discussions of the five principles of American democracy considered in the 2004-2005 radio series: individual freedoms, equality, economic opportunity, civic engagement, and justice.

We propose using 2005 WTP funds to implement “On Principle: A Statewide Conversation” as a follow up program to our 2004/2005 WTP project, a radio series in which Oregonians consider 5 principles of American democracy: individual freedoms, equality, economic opportunity, civic engagement, and justice. On Principle: A Statewide Conversation will consist of a series of public programs in communities in Oregon that bring people from different sectors & backgrounds together to engage with each other to learn about and discuss these 5 principles that are considered the core of our democracy.

OCH proposes to design and implement a new Teacher Institute on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in American Democracy. We will offer a special grant cycle to solicit proposals for “One Book” style community reading and discussion programs that have a thematic focus on American citizenship. And we will devote an issue of Oregon Humanities magazine to 5 principles of American Democracy we have focused on in other WTP programs to deepen and broaden the impact of this initiative.

The program initiative, "Borders and Boundaries" which will explore American history, the priniciples of democracy through lectures, a special issue of Oregon Humanities magazine and teacher institutes.

OCH will help Oregonians examine how American history and culture reflect our notions of borders and boundaries—the imagined and real spaces that help us to, and keep us from, knowing one another. Borders and Boundaries will create opportunities to converse about and reflect on ideas of nation and state, race and class, and identity and community. These ideas are worthy of deep consideration, especially given our transnational world and the shifting expectations and realities that accompany it.

In 2009, OCH will enter the final year of its borders and boundaries initiative that examines how the humanities, through American history and culture, creates opportunities to talk about and reflect on ideas of nation and state, race, class, gender and community. In Oregon—a state with deep urban-rural divides reflected in our politics, culture, and sense of personal identity—borders and boundaries will help bridge the real and imagined spaces that both unite and divide our communities.

First, the OCH Summer Teacher Institute The Unfinished Nation -- July 17-19 on the campus of Southern Oregon University -- will serve 30 teachers from all regions of the state. Second, the OCH Summer Honors Symposium: The Pursuit of Happiness is a three-day overnight think camp for high-school students from all of Oregon. Third, Humanity in Perspective will provide a free college-level course in the humanities for low-income adults that examines the foundations of democracy. Finally, Oregon Humanities summer issue will examine how consumerism and the accumulation of "stuff" has become a part of the American identity. These projects will commence July 1, 2009 and end, including any evaluation, by June 30, 2010.

Endowment for the Idea Lab Summer Institute for teachers and teens and the Conversation Project about ideas crucial to Oregon communities.

Oregon Humanities respectfully requests the National Endowment for the Humanities' consideration of a $250,000 challenge grant to be matched by $750,000 in private contributions in support of the OH endowment. A gift at this level will grow our capacity to meet the needs of Oregonians for public humanities programming that helps them to examine their beliefs, deepen their connections to each other, and make Oregon a better place to live. In February 2014, OH formulated a new vision: an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, explores challenging questions, and strives for just communities. A challenge grant from the NEH will enable OH to help additional people and communities across the state become more informed, compassionate, and civically engaged. This kind of work - person by person, organization by organization, and community by community - is essential to preserving the thoughtful, vital culture Oregon needs.

Implementation of a three-year program of community discussions statewide, with a specific focus on reaching underserved rural and Spanish-speaking residents.

Oregon Humanities (OH) will increase the impact of our successful Conversation Project by connecting more Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities. With NEH support, OH will ensure that every county in Oregon has regular access to high-quality humanities-based discussion programs and a relevant and welcoming model of convening community members for reflective conversation across differences of belief, political affiliation, race, class, language, and educational background. OH will build more, and more diverse, partnerships with host organizations, with greatest attention to rural and Spanish-speaking communities; grow our team of discussion leaders with attention to geographic, ethnic, racial, and topical diversity; and develop annual responsive statewide community conversation initiatives that will provide deeper public programming opportunities through scholar cohort work and educational toolkits. The result will be a more resilient and connected Oregon.

Implementation of 24 community discussions, a one-day public symposium, and numerous public programs all exploring issues of place, home, and belonging across Oregon.

Power and Place is a comprehensive statewide project exploring the theme through twenty-four community discussions, a one-day training for scholar-facilitators and community partners, a one-day public symposium, a Think & Drink event, a conversation toolkit, three issues of Oregon Humanities' nationally recognized magazine and an associated short video. We will marshal all of these vehicles to help Oregonians think and talk with one another about the love for, loss of, and fight for place, home, and belonging. Our goals with this project are to do the following: 1) foster sustained public conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and to our state’s future, 2)encourage Oregonians to be more informed and engaged in the civic activity of their communities, 3) cultivate the practice of talking and listening to those with whom we may disagree, and 4) provide ongoing access to vital educational resources, as well as creative tools for civic engagement and public dialogue.

Oregon Humanities is committed to helping Oregonians explore challenging questions, deepen their capacity to understand diverse perspectives, and strive for just communities. To accomplish our mission to connect Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities, we offer nearly 200 discussion-based programs across the state each year, publish a triannual magazine featuring award-winning regional artists and writers, create multimedia content that provokes conversation and reflection, and award public grants to small organizations that get people thinking and talking about core questions in their communities. Founded in 1971, we are an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and a partner of the Oregon Cultural Trust. We partner with more than 150 cultural, educational, and social service organizations and reach more than 60,000 Oregonians each year.
